The Italian Procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Clerkenwell

In the early 19th century groups of highly skilled Italians began to come to London. Glassworkers, clockmakers, jewellers, goldsmiths. In the mid 19th century, many more Italians came to the area. These were less skilled, musicians, knife grinders, piano makers, and eventually ice-cream makers. Many settling in the area around Saffron Hill. By 1845, the numbers were so great that plans were made to establish an Italian church.

In 1883, twenty years after St Peter’s Italian Church was consecrated, permission was sought from the local authorities and police to hold the very first ‘Italian Procession’ in the streets of Clerkenwell. It is said that Queen Victoria gave her special consent, and the roads have been closed for each procession since. This was hugely significant as it was to be the first outdoor Catholic event held in England since the reformation of King Henry VIII. From 1896 it became an annual event and has taken place every July since, except during the war years.

The ornate church of St Peters, modelled on a Roman basilica, is still the focal point for London’s Italian community. And the procession is still the highlight of the year. The procession heads west up Clerkenwell Road, up Roseberry Avenue, down Farringdon Road, and then back to the church for 5pm mass. Many Italians and onlookers also head for Warner Street where stalls sell all sorts of Italian goodies. Salami, ciabatta, prosciutto, gelato, Peroni, Sicilain pastries. A splendid way to finish the day.
